Barr-Nunn Celebrates 25 Years in Business

Granger, IA-September 1, 2007

In 1982, Robert Sturgeon founded Sturgeon Truck Lines with thirteen trucks, hauling intermodal freight from Iowa to rail yards in Omaha, Kansas City, and Denver. In 1985, the Company expanded into the common and contract freight business under the name of Barr-Nunn Transportation, and began a rapid expansion of its tractor and trailer fleets, customer base, and geographic footprint. In 1989, Barr-Nunn opened a freight brokerage company to round out its transportation service offering. Over the past 25 years, Barr-Nunn has become a leader in the transportation industry, with a current fleet of nearly 700 late-model tractors, over 1,700 trailers and a work force of over 700 employees and 124 independent contractors.

Throughout its history, Barr-Nunn has evolved as customer demands have changed. Once a long-haul, nationwide carrier, the Company has adapted to serve the short to medium-haul, regional markets. With on-time pick-up and delivery service requirements as high as 99%, Barr-Nunn’s dedicated transportation professionals continually earn customer praise and service awards. Conscientious drivers, office personnel, and maintenance technicians serve a diverse, service-sensitive customer base, including many Fortune 500 companies. Late model equipment, satellite-based communication and tracking software, a flexible electronic data interchange system, and customized computer software are just a few tools utilized by Barr-Nunn personnel to fulfill such demanding requirements.

Understanding the critical role its independent contractor and company drivers play in achieving its growth and performance goals, Barr-Nunn provides leading pay and incentive programs to attract and retain dependable, safe drivers, and offers various pay and home-time programs to accommodate each driver’s pay and personal time preferences.

In addition to recognizing its responsibility to its customers and employees, Barr-Nunn has a long history of public service, as well. Barr-Nunn has hauled hay, water and clothing to natural disaster areas, has collaborated with local law enforcement agencies to train drug-sniffing dogs, has hauled trees to the Oklahoma City Memorial Grove Project, and has supported the armed services and their families by joining the “America Supports You” campaign, to name just a few examples of how Barr-Nunn strives to fulfill its public service commitment.

With a solid foundation of commitment to its customers, driver and non-driving employees, independent contractors, and to local and national communities, Barr-Nunn Transportation eagerly looks forward to the challenges and opportunities awaiting it in the next 25 years!
